About Devin

On Wednesday afternoon, September 26, 2012, Devin Durden, the oldest son of Buford High School Head Girls Basketball Coach Gene Durden, was in a very serious motorcycle accident in Buford, Georgia. Devin was a standout football player at Buford High School and played tight end at the Air Force Academy. He had been home less than 24 hours. Devin sustained a severely broken leg (femur), a broken nose, and one of his thumbs was severely injured and a part of it had to be amputated. He suffered a gashed tendon in his right foot. Both of his lungs collapsed. Devin has so many fractured ribs that doctors could not count them all. The most serious injury is to Devin's back. The family was told early on by doctors that there was a real fear of paralysis from the waist down. Doctors reported to the family after surgery that Wednesday night that Devin's spinal cord was NOT severed. Doctors scheduled a second surgery Thursday to stabilize Devin's spinal cord and to discover the full extent of injuries to his spine.

After completion of the second surgery Thursday night, doctors informed the family that Devin's spinal cord is severed, as originally feared. Devin is paralyzed from the waist down. Coach Durden, Cherie, Christian, Coby and Danielle are devastated, brokenhearted, as are we all. There is great hope that Devin will regain use and function of both arms and hands and be able to breathe on his own. Devin is in the ICU at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. He will eventually be transferred to Shepherd where he will begin the rehabilitation process.

Family and friends of Devin and the Durden family have come together, ready to attack this thing head-on and be a part of helping what Romans 8:28 teaches us, that "all things work together for good for those who love Him." Partnering with Friends of the Durdens, these two initiatives are in place to exhaust every angle to locate and obtain a wheelchair-ready vehicle, renovations to their home, medical and living expenses along with the emotional and spiritual work that multiplies every day.
